However, it is Malbec, originally from Bordeaux and the south west of France, that has established the most successful presence in Mendoza.\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eProducer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLocated in the high altitude Tupungato Valley region of Mendoza, this modern winery benefits from a long, cool growing season and strong UV sunlight that helps maximise the aromas and complexity of the resulting grapes. Tupungato sits at the western extreme of Mendoza right at the foot of the Andes mountains with an elevation of 1,200 meters giving benefit to the vineyards from a much cooler climate, abundant sun, and sharp contrast between day and night temperatures. They used 80% new barrels, with up to 10% made of American oak looking to (in their own words) give more sucrosity and sweetness to the wine, as it's a more vertical, tense and elegant expression of Alión. Part of the wine matured in concrete (something they started in 2016), and in 2021 they are experimenting with a 4,000-liter Rousseau foudre, as they want to keep working the texture and freshness. The wine is ripe at 15% alcohol and has a pH of 3.8 and a mellow 4.6 grams of acidity, round and soft. The wine matured until it was bottled in June 2020. How had I missed this? Perhaps my wife had signed for it earlier in the day, and it was lost among other boxes in our hallway. There was no indication on the outside of its contents, but I am delighted that I felt moved to open it because it meant that I managed to taste 2021 Whispering Angel in the last few hours of 2021. It is oddly exciting to taste a wine when it is so young and so recently bottled, and one rarely gets the chance to taste Northern Hemisphere wines in the year of their birth. More often than not, newly bottled samples taste shocked and reticent, but these are not descriptors of this tremendous wine. I usually taste alone, but as my wife and I felt obliged to abandon plans for a party in favour of inviting a handful of neighbours around for an early evening drink, I opened this nascent Angel for a small group of us to taste.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe appreciation was unanimous\u003c\/strong\u003e, and I was impressed with the many descriptors offered by our friends – after all, they are all keen wine drinkers.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe overarching feeling of the group was that this was a superb effort\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand one which\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003etasted delicious\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ealready but which had a seam of nervy acidity which might propel it forwards for more than just one summer, and I couldn’t agree more. The third Thursday of November has always been the day this wine goes on sale, and a couple of brave stalwarts continue raising a glass. It might be clinging on by its fingernails, but it has more integrity than the multiple grape variety ‘days’ that have faked their way into existence. The annual Penfolds Collection launch yoyos around the calendar, and even Bordeaux’s En Primeur circus tries, but usually fails, to hit the same week each year. It was all over and done with before September kicked off, and like its sibling, this is a beautifully relaxed and enticing wine. I am told that there is considerable interest in the Tibouren variety at Domaine de l’Ile, and we can expect to see this grape play a more active role in the blend as Syrah wains. The final blend in this vintage is a racy 27% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, 22% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 5% Tibouren, and the shale and clay soils allow every aromatic element in this quartet of grapes to shine. All of the vines are farmed organically, as you might expect. With little handling involved, aside from excellent vineyard husbandry and sensitive winemaking a given, Pierre explained that the critical decision each year is on what date they pick each parcel of vines. It is safe to say that in 2022 Pierre and his team nailed these decisions! Again a beautiful background of shy saltiness allows the rose petal, rhubarb stalk and melon nuances to shine, and, in common with the white wine, the herbal and forest tones bring even more drama to proceedings.  \u003cstrong\u003eThis is my favourite Domaine de L’Ile release to date\u003c\/strong\u003e, and this is solely down to the heavenly texture and seriously impressive length of finish. Apparently, the ‘mistral dew’ played a big part in the success of these 2022s.
